1911년 퀴리부인이 라듐으로 노벨 화학상을 받을 당시만해도, 방사능 물질의 위험성에 대한 인식이 부족하여 치약, 화장품 등에도 사용되었다.

라듐과 달리 스트론튬-90 (Sr-90)은 투과력이 좀 더 높은 베타선을 주로 방출한다. 게다가, 깨지기 쉬운 초기 플라스틱인 베이클라이트 베젤에 사용하기에는 위험하다.

Unlike radium, strontium-90 (Sr-90) mainly emits beta rays which are more penetrating than alpha rays. In addition, it is dangerous for use in bakelite bezels that are very fragile.

1961년, 리콜 대상이었던 GMT 6542를 가진 미해군 장교와 그의 가족은 롤렉스를 상대로 수백만 달러 상당의 손해배상 소송 제기한다. 당시 240불에 불과한 시계 가격을 생각하면 엄청난 금액이 아닐 수 없다. 소송의 결과는 알 수 없지만 2011년 VintageRolexForum (VRF)에 올라온 글에 의하면 이 해군 장교는 여전히 잘 살고 있다고 한다.

In 1961, a US Navy officer filed a damage suit against ROLEX for millions of dollars. He claimed that he and his family were exposed to radioactive rays from his wristwatch, ROLEX GMT-master 6542. Considering the watch price of only $ 240 at the time, it is a huge amount. The outcome of the case is unknown, but according to the following article posted on the VintageRolexForum (VRF) in 2011, the Navy officer is still alive.

하지만, 1980년 중반에서 90년 초기에 롤렉스가 공급받은 일부 다이얼에 문제가 발생한다. 특히, 익스플로러 2 등의 흰색 다이얼은 크림색으로 변색되고 서브마리너 등의 검정색 래커 다이얼은 크랙이 발생하였다.

However, some of the dials supplied to ROLEX in the mid-1980s and early 90's were troubled. Especially, white dials, such as ROLEX Explorer 2, were discolored to cream, and black lacquer dials, such as ROLEX Submariner, were cracked.
